Casa’s Board of Directors is comprised of nine respected leaders from the business, medical and civic community in the San Diego area. Board Members serve three-year terms without compensation. They may serve three consecutive three-year terms.
The Casa Board Members work closely with the Board-appointed Management Company, Life Care Services. Both of these entities place a high priority on input and recommendations from residents elected to serve on the Executive Council, and their advisory committees.
Board of Directors
Mike Stelman was elected to the Board in December of 2011. Mr. Stelman was elected Board President in December of 2014. He served the Rancho Bernardo community for over 40 years as a Real Estate Broker specializing in Sales Management, Marketing and Training. He is currently retired and devotes considerable time to Rotary International, serving the needs of the less fortunate. He has served San Diego in numerous leadership positions and volunteer organizations and is currently active on the Board of the Palomar Pomerado Hospital Foundation serving on its Finance Committee.
Kathy Frederick was elected to the Board in March 2012. Ms. Frederick serves as Chair of the Governance Committee and a member of the Casa Foundation Board, Finance/Investment Committee and Legal Committee. Kathy was employed by Scripps Health as a Sr. Director of Special Projects and frequently consults for hospital/healthcare systems nationally. Kathy has over 25 years of experience in healthcare and has worked with several large healthcare systems in San Diego County. She has been active in regional and national organizations for Human Resources and Healthcare Recruitment. She also currently serves as a Board Member for the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, California.
Jay Riordan was elected to the Board in March of 2013. Mr. Riordan serves as a member of the Marketing and Community Outreach Committee, Governance Committee and is the Chair of the Planning and Construction Committee. He has been President of Dream Design Builders in San Diego for the last 30 years. In 2007, Remodeling Magazine inducted Mr. Riordan into the Remodeling Hall of Fame with their Big 50 Award. Mr. Riordan has been active in his community over the years as President of the Rancho Bernardo Community Council, President of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation, as well as involved with the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary, San Diego North Chamber of Commerce, and Rancho Bernardo Business Association.
Steve DeMatteo was elected to the Board on December of 2014. Steve serves on the Finance/Investment Committee and as Vice Chair of the Casa Foundation Board. Steve constructs and implements asset management solutions for the team- including strategic asset allocation portfolios, tax-advantaged income strategies and wealth preservation solutions. Prior to his career in wealth management, Steve served as a helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps where he was decorated for performance in peacetime, humanitarian and combat operations. Steve still serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. Steve earned an M.B.A. in Advanced Finance from the University of South Florida and a B.A. in International Relations from Tulane University, where he studied abroad at the University of Cambridge, England. Steve enjoys giving back to his community and is an inductee into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame. Steve and his wife Kristine have two sons, Nicholas and Dylan. Steve enjoys open-water swimming, playing tennis and listening to live music.
Don Gragg graduated from Willamette University and then received his M.D. degree from McGill University. Following his internship at U. S. Naval Hospital, in Oakland, Dr. Gragg completed submarine medicine and nuclear power training prior to his assignment as Medical Officer on one of the first Polaris missile submarines. During his residency in Internal Medicine, he and his wife, Charlotte, completed their family of a daughter and two sons. Don served as Chief of Medicine at the U. S. Naval Hospital in Naples, Italy for three years. In 1973, Dr. Gragg completed a Ph.D. program in Higher Education (Medical Education) at Michigan State University. He spent the remainder of his 23-year naval career in Medical Education Design with the U.S. Navy and the Department of Defense based in Bethesda, Maryland. Following retirement from the Navy, Don was in charge of alcohol and drug treatment programs for Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. After his retirement and move to San Diego, Dr. Gragg became active in several community groups, particularly the World Affairs of the Council of San Diego. Don was inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame in 2007 recognizing his years of leadership in local volunteer organizations.
Ms. Kaye was elected to the Board in October 2008. Ms. Kaye serves as Chairman of both the Legal Committee and Foundation as well as a member of the Marketing and Community Outreach Committee and the Governance Committee. Ms. Kaye has owned and operated the Law Offices of Marcy E. Kaye since 1991. The law firm represents both businesses and employees in employment related issues and represents persons involved in personal injury litigation. Prior to opening her own law firm, Ms. Kaye was an insurance defense attorney for the law firm of Shifflet, Sharp and Walters in San Diego. Ms. Kaye has been a Board Member of the non-profit organization Childhelp for the past several years. Childhelp was created to prevent severe child abuse and neglect. Ms. Kaye is currently an adjunct professor of Advanced Mediation at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
Dr. Spear was elected to the Board in December, 2013 and serves as a member of the Governance Committee, Health and Wellness Committee and is the Chair of the Marketing and Community Outreach Committee. He is a native of San Diego. He received his Bachelor of Arts from The Colorado College, a Master of Science from the University of Southern California, a Master of Arts from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. He retired after 38 years as a Professor at Palomar College, although he still serves on the Palomar College Health Benefits Committee. While at Palomar, he served for many years on the Budget Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and was President of the Faculty Senate and Chairman of the Earth Sciences Department. He was an active participant in the design and planning for the new Natural Sciences Building and Planetarium. He also served as Vice President of his family’s construction company in La Mesa for many years.
Mr. Brown joined the Board in May of 2014 and serves as the Chair of the Finance Committee and is a member of the Marketing and Community Outreach Committee and Legal Committee. Craig’s community involvement parallels his career of 30 years at the helm of Rancho Financial Mortgage, which he founded in 1984. He has served a number of terms on the Board of the local Business Chamber and is a founding member and Past President of the Rancho Bernardo Business Association. Craig serves on the Board of Palomar Health District Foundation and was a member of the Board of Directors of RB Sunrise Rotary. Craig has also been a leading volunteer, Director and supporter of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation, the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Board, and the RB Historical Society. In 2009, Craig was inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame, in recognition of his community service.
Katherine Lord has more than 35 years experience as an Architect specializing in Educational (University and K-12), Healthcare and Retirement projects. Katherine has a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Architecture from Washington University. Katherine is one of the Principals at Lord Architecture. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects, USGBC/SD Member, Member of Women in Architecture as well as a Board Member of the NewSchool of Architecture Advisory Board. She joined the Casa Board in December of 2014 and currently serves on the Health and Wellness Committee and Planning and Construction Committee.
