The Benefits of Solo Aging in Independent Living
A 2021 U.S. Census Bureau report found that 19.6% of Americans between 55 and 64 reported being childless, along with 15.9% of those 65–74 and 10.9% of those over 75. Plus, 27% of adults 60 and older live alone, as do about half of women over 65. And while most older adults rely on family members to provide some level of assistance or care, for solo agers (those without children or a spouse), having a plan for the future is vital. That’s why thousands of single seniors are considering the benefits of independent living communities like Casa de las Campanas.
“The community and staff of Casa de las Campanas are all friendly, and accommodating. I felt welcome here as soon as I moved in. After my husband passed, it was time to move from a home that was too big for me, and choosing Casa de las Campanas is the best decision I could have made.”

A Plan for Solo Aging
Before you start to plan for your future, you should think about what you want it to look like. To help, here are something things to consider:
How do you want to age?
If you’re healthy and active today, it’s important to start thinking about tomorrow. Where do you want to live? In an area that’s walkable or do you want access to mass transportation? What sort of services and amenities do you want to live close to? What kind of climate do you prefer? Do you want to find a place where you can age in place or have care nearby?
Get your plans in order
Once you know what you want regarding long-term care, make sure you name a medical power of attorney and financial power of attorney (POA) who can help carry out your wishes. Having a POA still gives you the ability to act in your own interests, but it also allows someone else to make important decisions if you suddenly have a medical crisis or memory loss takes away your ability to make important decisions. If you don’t name someone, then the courts can appoint a guardian. Someone who may not know your likes, dislikes or wishes around your health care.
Build up your network
If you are an independent ager, consider how you can develop a social network that not only supports you but also makes it easy to get connected, develop a new hobby or interest and stay active.
Benefits of Moving to a Retirement Community for Solo Agers
Senior living communities provide a range of benefits you might not be able to get staying in your own home. They make it easier and more convenient to live the life you want. Some benefits include:
Social opportunities
If you’re solo aging, senior living communities have calendars filled with social activities, classes, educational discussions and more. They also have a welcoming committee to help new residents meet people. So you’re sure to find others who share your interests.
Maintenance-free lifestyle
If keeping up with household chores, maintenance, lawn care, housekeeping and even cooking is becoming difficult, independent living communities can give you the freedom to do more of what you want and less of what you don’t.
Higher levels of care available on-site
Some retirement communities offer higher levels of care including assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation right on their campus. That way, if you ever need care, you’ll already have a plan in place.
“I moved into independent living at Casa de las Campanas three years ago. I was renting a condo in Rancho Bernardo and wanted to stay in the area. I found five San Diego communities that appeared to fit my needs, and after visiting them, I chose Casa because of its amenities, friendly residents, location and not-for-profit status. Happily, I was immediately included in a group of interesting single men at their regular dinner table which was fun to look forward to every day. I am now serving on a committee and enjoying the gym.”
