Beyond Steps: Casa’s 8-Dimension Road Map for Whole Person Wellness

whole person wellness at CDC

“To keep the body in good health is a duty … otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” – Buddha

Wellness at Casa de las Campanas goes far beyond a daily step count. We take a whole-person approach — one that considers every part of who you are and how you live. Guided by the 8 dimensions of wellness — emotional, physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, vocational, environmental and health services — we design our programming to support a well-rounded, purpose-filled lifestyle.

Whether you’re drawn to group fitness, quiet reflection, volunteering or creative pursuits, there’s space here to do what energizes you. While no two residents are alike, the principles that shape our wellness offerings meet everyone where they are and help them thrive.

Why are the 8 dimensions of wellness important? Because they offer a road map for thriving, not just surviving. In this first blog of our wellness series, we’ll take a closer look at what the eight areas of wellness are and how they can be incorporated into one’s daily life at Casa.

What Are the 8 Dimensions of Wellness You’ll Find at Casa?

Here’s how life at our community supports whole-person living, with these 8 dimensions of wellness examples built into daily experiences:

  1. Physical: Stay active with group fitness classes, strength training or scenic hikes.
  2. Emotional: Build resilience and reduce stress through meditation, pet-friendly spaces, and access to counseling and support programs.
  3. Intellectual: Challenge your brain with lectures, book groups, language classes, art workshops and hands-on creative workshops.
  4. Spiritual: Find meaning and connection through Chaplain services, interfaith discussions and opportunities to give back.
  5. Social: Connect with others through resident-led clubs, holiday events and shared meals — or enjoy peaceful downtime when you prefer.
  6. Occupational: Stay purpose-driven by joining one of 40+ committees, mentoring local students or volunteering for community causes.
  7. Environmental: Live surrounded by beauty with native plant gardens, sustainable practices and day trips that celebrate the natural world.
  8. Health Services: Benefit from on-site care and a full continuum of support. Life Plan contracts and wellness resources make planning easy and proactive.

Wellness That Moves You — Inside and Out

Staying active and engaged are closely tied to several of the 8 dimensions of health. World Health Organization guidelines recommend that adults 65+ should aim for at least 150–300 minutes of moderate activity each week, along with strength and balance exercises to help prevent falls and chronic illnesses. A study by the American Heart Association highlights resistance training as a powerful way to maintain muscle and improve heart health.

Perched on a hilltop in Rancho Bernardo, Casa de las Campanas offers stunning mountain views, fresh ocean breezes and plenty of ways to stay active. With exceptional amenities and engaging programs, Casa makes it easy to embrace physical wellness, whether you’re on campus or exploring the outdoors.

  • Swim year-round with both indoor and heated outdoor pools perfect for laps or low-impact aqua classes.
  • Work out your way in the fully equipped fitness center or exercise studio, with options for strength, cardio and flexibility.
  • Join a class offering something for every fitness level, from stretching and tai chi to chair yoga and balance training.
  • Get social while staying active in walking clubs that explore Casa’s scenic paths and nearby Coast-to-Crest Trail.
  • Enjoy friendly games on the putting green, bocce court, ping-pong tables or in the billiards lounge.
  • Bring your pooch for outdoor play at one of our two fenced-in dog parks.
  • Recover and recharge with a relaxing massage after a day full of movement and connection.

High Adventure, Higher Confidence: Wellness at 13,000 Feet

In 2019, resident Bob Googins founded the High Adventure Club, and he organizes monthly outings from April to October designed to push boundaries and boost self-confidence. The club encourages residents, including those who need a little support, to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the idea that adventure has no age limit.

“The purpose is to get people to stretch their concept of what retirement is and what they can do — things they never thought about doing,” Bob says.

More than just bucket-list thrills, High Adventure Club activities support physical wellness in unexpected, exhilarating ways. Skydiving above Oceanside or paragliding from Torrey Pines challenge balance, coordination and flexibility, while also giving your cardiovascular system a healthy jolt. Jet Skiing in Coronado Bay engages core muscles and strengthens upper and lower body mobility.

Soaring over Temecula in a sunrise or sunset hot-air balloon requires physical effort to enter and exit the basket, promoting sensory awareness through an immersive outdoor experience. Open-cockpit biplane rides and glider plane flights stimulate spatial awareness and fine motor coordination. Trail horseback riding is a full-body activity that improves posture, joint flexibility and muscle strength.

“As we get older, it’s important not to become couch potatoes and slip into a sedentary lifestyle,” Bob says. “Staying active is essential for longevity, and helping people feel good about themselves also plays a big role in living longer.”

Adventure, Wellness, Community: Find It All at Casa

Wellness isn’t a single goal; it’s an ongoing balance. By weaving fitness classes with brain games, nature outings with social clubs, Casa supports residents in all dimensions of well-being. Whether you’re cycling indoors to protect your joints or skydiving to check off a lifelong dream, you’re investing in your whole self.

As Bob says, “Yes, we’re in a retirement community, but we’re still alive and we can do a hell of a lot more things than we ever thought we could.”
