Always Be Learning: How Intellectual Wellness Shapes Life at Casa de las Campanas
Henry Ford believed age had nothing to do with staying young. “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
Residents embrace this mindset every day at Casa de las Campanas. The next installment in our blog series exploring the Eight Dimensions of Wellness focuses on intellectual wellness: What it means and how Casa de las Campanas brings it to life.
What Is Intellectual Health?
Intellectual health is your capacity to approach new ideas with an open mind. Learning new concepts, taking on challenges, and sharpening your skills keep your brain in shape and expand your ability to adapt and grow throughout life. Recognizing creative abilities in yourself and others and finding ways to share what you know sit at the center of this dimension of wellness.
“Continued learning and stimulation of the body and mind” is how Stephanie Ramos, Casa’s director of community life, describes Intellectual Wellness. “We offer an array of intellectual, social, physical and creative outlet opportunities for residents.”
At Casa, you can feed your intellectual curiosity in countless ways: enroll in a class, join a new group or devote time to developing a new skill.
Staying curious keeps the brain active, and an active brain is a powerful tool for aging well. A 2025 clinical trial published in JAMA® found that older adults who followed structured lifestyle programs showed measurable gains in cognitive function and executive skills over two years.
Lifetimes of Knowledge, Right Down the Hall
One of the most distinctive aspects of intellectual wellness at Casa is who’s teaching. Our community is home to retired professors, physicians, authors, investors, botanists, master gardeners, political figures and world travelers. Residents have lifetimes of knowledge and enthusiasm for sharing it.
“We’re always looking for talent and welcome anyone with something valuable to offer,” Stephanie says. “Many of our residents had incredible professions and hobbies, and we love to showcase them.”
Every month, resident-run programming brings that expertise to the broader community. The activities team helps plan and promote each presentation, creating an experience that’s engaging for the presenter and audience.
Intellectual self-care looks different for everyone. For some it means attending a lecture. For others it means leading one. Current resident-led offerings include a not-so-technical forum, travelogues, a photography club, Spanish conversations and a mock investment club.
Residents Lead the Way at Casa
If you’re wondering how to improve intellectual wellness in a meaningful, sustained way, the answer at Casa is to get involved.
Our 40-plus resident committees are proof of that mindset in action and a direct reflection of our belief that residents help shape what life here looks like. Each month, Stephanie’s team meets with resident committee members to discuss upcoming events, brainstorm new ideas and coordinate logistics for larger gatherings. Residents volunteer to help with setups, greet guests and spread the word to their neighbors.
“We remind residents they are our eyes and ears with their peers on what they would like to see and do at Casa,” Stephanie says.
The result is a community calendar reflecting what residents actually want, and a culture of ownership and engagement that keeps intellectual curiosity alive at every level.
The Social Side of Staying Sharp
For a new resident wondering ways to improve intellectual wellness day to day, the opportunities at Casa are plentiful and varied. A typical week might include fitness classes that challenge the body and mind, dining experiences to spark conversation, happy hours where connections form naturally and intellectual presentations covering everything from current events to the natural world.
“At Casa, residents can be as active and social as they wish,” Stephanie says. “There are plenty of opportunities to meet new people and stay engaged, as social consistency also supports mental sharpness.”
That connection between Intellectual and Social Wellness is intentional. Ways to improve intellectual wellness aren’t limited to sitting in a lecture. They include the conversations that happen before and after, the friendships that form around shared interests and the confidence that comes from feeling seen and valued.
The Bigger Wellness Picture at Casa
Intellectual programming at Casa doesn’t exist in isolation. Stephanie and her team design a balanced calendar that touches all Eight Dimensions of Wellness: Intellectual, Emotional, Physical, Social, Spiritual, Vocational, Environmental and Health Services.
“Though we offer many intellectual opportunities, we strive to plan a well-balanced calendar that focuses not only on intellectual activities but also on all Eight Dimensions of Wellness,” she says. “This helps promote holistic whole-person health for our residents.”
That balance is what makes intellectual health at Casa feel less like a program and more like a way of living. Residents celebrate curiosity, share expertise and bring something to teach and something to learn every day.
